The consultant had a requirement to extract weather data from a Canadian government web site that included legacy temperature readings from several cities and stations located all over Canada. These readings were then transferred to Microsoft Excel worksheets and consolidated into projects which were shown to potential clients related to energy management and acquisition.
The process for extracting data was meticulous and slow. First, an operator would obtain a date range for a certain station or city in Canada. Next, he would open the Canadian weather web site, and through a couple more mouse clicks, would be able to navigate to the web page which contained a table of data for a particular day, month, or yearly time period. Next, he copied the data from the web page and pasted it into an Excel worksheet. Next, he manipulated the data and created headings for the the data. Next, he would look at the data line by line and determine if the data were within the parameters of his client's requirements, manually editing lines that contained invalid data. Finally, the operator would enter client, project, and building information into the header of the worksheet.
ZapDude was able to provide a function that automated the entire process of data extraction and Excel Sheet formatting. In addition, queries were created to filter the data to the client's requirements, such as minimum temperature, days with high winds, snowfall activity, etc. Finally, the database stored all the data extracted from the web, which enabled the application to bypass downloading data that was already retrieved in future processing.
To augment the process, ZapDude created a wizard-like data entry system that made it easy for associates to enter parameters. In addition to providing a step-by-step, error-free entry process, the wizard also includes a bulk download function, so voluminous data information could be extracted without having to enter parameters or conditions. This allowed the company to set up downloads overnight and during the weekends.
ZapDude is proud to be of service to these Canadian weather engineers, and looks forward to working with them for several projects in the future. Of course, ZapDude provides the SAME level of service and dedication to everyone.
